The 21 economies that make up the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) affirmed this Saturday that they are committed to accelerating “clean, fair, affordable, inclusive and sustainable” energy transitions, as well as encouraging efforts to triple renewable energy capacity. worldwide.
In one joint statement issued after the summit leaders in Lima, APEC ministers reiterated the need to integrate “still more measures” to address environmental challengesincluding climate change, extreme weather conditions and natural disasters, with a view to “ending energy poverty” and advancing the global energy transition.
In that sense, they specified that their commitment to accelerate the energy transition refers to several pathways consistent with global net-zero greenhouse gas emissions/carbon neutrality by or around mid-century, taking into account the latest scientific advances.

They also recalled their commitment to pursue and encourage efforts to triple renewable energy capacity globally through existing targets and policies, as well as demonstrate similar ambition with respect to other zero and low emissions technologies, including reduction and elimination technologiesin line with national circumstances for 2030.
APEC ministers committed to work on the definition of “a new collective goal” the energy sector aims to increase the proportion of electricity generated by carbon-free and carbon-neutral sources.
Likewise, they welcomed the endorsement by the Energy Ministers of the “APEC Policy Guidance to Develop and Implement clean hydrogen policy frameworks and low carbon emissions in Asia and the Pacific.
In addition, they recalled their commitment to “rationalize and gradually eliminate inefficient subsidies” to fossil fuels that encourage “wasteful” consumptionand recognized the importance of providing essential energy services to those who need them.
On the other hand, the ministers reiterated their decision to accelerate the implementation of the APEC Internet and Digital Economy Roadmap (AIDER).
In this sense, they encouraged the responsible development and application of new technologies, strengthening digital connectivity, developing digital and telecommunications infrastructure, and eliminating digital dividesincluding the digital gender divide, to enable engagement and participation.
Likewise, they praised the interactions between APEC economies on digitalization to promote transition to the formal economyand the benefits and challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
They recognized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an important tool for drive innovationpromote sustainable economic growth and transform various aspects of daily life in their economies.
In this way, they encouraged APEC economies to seek growth “innovative, inclusive, interconnected and sustainable” by continuing to exchange views and contribute to ongoing relevant international discussions on Al, as appropriate.
The ministerial statement was released this Saturday at the end of the APEC 2024 leaders’ summit in Lima, which was attended by 16 heads of government from the 21 member economies.
