An agreement was announced between the top body in world football and the US Department of Justice which had arrested several executives in 2015 for corruption. Infantino: “They will be useful for young people and football communities”
The United States Department of Justice awarded the Fifa Foundation $ 201 million as compensation for the losses suffered by FIFA itself, Concacaf (Central America) and Conmebol (South America) due to corruption in football. This money was seized from the bank accounts of former officials arrested in 2015. All of this money will go into a new global fund set up under the aegis of the Fifa Foundation to help finance football-related projects with a positive impact on communities around the world. .
“I am delighted to see that the money that was illegally stolen from football is returning to be used for its purposes, as it should have been from the beginning,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino. “I want to sincerely thank the US judicial authorities for their efforts in this regard, for their quick and effective approach to bringing these matters to a head. The truth is that, thanks to their intervention in 2015, we have been able to radically change Fifa from a toxic organization at the time to a highly respected and trusted global sports governing body. Thankfully, we are now over that unfortunate period in history and it is good to see that significant funding is being made available to the Foundation, which may have a positive impact on so many people around the world of football, especially through youth and community programs. “
The “return” plan
The FIFA president added: “Since 2016, FIFA and the United States Department of Justice have been working closely together and I believe this decision also recognizes the significant progress we have made in terms of good governance and transparency, which has been discussed and which they were introduced by FIFA officials and myself during meetings with the authorities. Today they know that with the Foundation this money is in good hands and will serve the purpose for which it is intended “. The World Football Remission Fund will be managed by the Fifa Foundation, an independent foundation that aims to promote positive social change around the world through football. The Fund, intended to focus in particular on youth and community programs, will allocate large amounts to projects related to Concacaf and Conmebol as they have suffered significantly from criminal activities. In addition, all projects will undergo rigorous checks, audits and compliance checks to ensure full transparency and accountability.
