The Arsenal FC did not get past a 0-0 win at promoted Leeds United on Sunday evening in the Premier League. The Gunners’ peat downturn continues; Nicolas Pepe even provided a negative highlight with a straight red card.
Arsenal simply cannot find its way under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have been waiting for a goal in the Premier League from the open game for over seven hours. And that despite an offensive that cost around 200 million euros in transfer fees (Aubameyang, Pepe, Lacazette).
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is currently sidelined, taking his first open-play Premier League shot on goal since October 4th against Leeds! Alexandre Lacazette stewed on the bench, in the closing stages Arteta preferred winger Willian as the “wrong nine”. And Nicolas Pepe is a story in itself.
Arsenal put 80 million euros on the table for the Ivorian in the summer of 2019 and landed a major mistake. Pepe plays stubbornly, breaks down and cannot crank the Gunners’ offensive.
Against Leeds, the striker was again only negative: for a headbutt, Pepe rightly saw the straight red card and will now miss the upcoming games with a suspension. A disservice to his team that was just plain stupid.
Arsenal lack creativity and playfulness. The fact that a Mesut Özil no longer makes it into the Gunners’ squad is a mystery with the current performance of his teammates. Something urgently needs to be done with the North Londoners, otherwise the final crash into the no man’s land of the Premier League threatens.
