E.The German Olympic team did not win another medal on Saturday. But there was reason to be happy with beach volleyball, among other things – and other German athletes were also satisfied with their results.
Swimming I: Sarah Köhler clearly missed another medal. Three days after bronze in the 1500 meter freestyle, the Frankfurt rider finished seventh over 800 meters after 8: 24.56 minutes. The American Katie Ledecky became Olympic champion. She won ahead of the two-time Tokyo Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus from Australia. Bronze went to 1500 meter world champion Simona Quadarella from Italy.
Swimming II: The American Caeleb Dressel won gold over the 100 meter butterfly in a world record time on the penultimate day of the Olympic pool swimming competitions. Dressel prevailed in 49.45 seconds ahead of the Hungarian Kristof Milak and the Swiss Noe Ponti.
Swimming III: The mixed medley relay from Great Britain set the fifth world record in swimming. Kathleen Dawson, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Freya Anderson hit the 4 x 100 meter mixed medley at the Olympic premiere after 3: 37.58 minutes. China took silver, bronze went to Australia. Germany was eliminated in the run-up.
Athletics I: The German mixed relay over 4 x 400 meters can now start in the Olympic final. The quartet moves up as the ninth team. The final will take place on Saturday (2.35 p.m. / CEST). The relay finished fifth in the heat on Friday. Because the jury later withdrew the disqualifications of the USA and the Dominican Republic, they only finished ninth and was therefore out for the time being. The DLV protested – successfully.
Athletics II: The three German discus throwers made it into the final. Kristin Pudenz from Potsdam (63.73 meters), Marike Steinacker from Leverkusen (63.22) and Claudine Vita from Neubrandenburg (62.46) qualified for the medal bouts. The American Valarie Allman achieved the top distance in the qualification with 66.42 meters, and Rio Olympic champion Sandra Perkovic from Croatia also made it to the final.
Athletics III: The German pole vaulters Oleg Zernikel and Bo Kanda Lita Baehre have reached the final. Lita Baehre from Leverkusen, fourth in the World Championship, overcame all jumps up to 5.75 meters in the first attempt. The German champion Zernikel, who lives in Landau, was 5.65 meters long to enter the medal fight on Tuesday (12.20 p.m. / CEST). In contrast, the Leverkusen Torben sheet was eliminated.
Do gymnastics: Gymnastics star Simone Biles does not make decisions on the jump and on the uneven bars after retiring for the all-around final. The US gymnastics federation announced that the 24-year-old US gymnast decided this after consulting the medical team. It should now continue to be assessed daily whether Biles will start in the finals on the floor and balance beam. Biles had previously canceled her start in the individual all-around competition due to mental problems.
Beach volleyball: The beach volleyball world championships, Clemens Wickler and Julius Thole, are in the round of 16. The two Hamburgers won their last group game against the Japanese Katsuhiro Shiratori / Yusuke Ishijima 2-0 (21:16, 21:11). It is not yet clear who they will play against in the knockout round.
