An ex-policeman killed this Thursday at least 35 peopleincluding 22 children between the ages of two and three, in an attack on a daycare center in Thailand, and then murdered his family and committed suicide, in one of the worst massacres ever perpetrated in this Asian country.

The perpetrator of the attack, a 34-year-old former police officer, armed with a rifle, a pistol and a knifebroke into a kindergarten in Na Klang around 12:30 pm (local time), said Colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithay of the Nong Bua Lamphu Provincial Police.

Authorities from the Central Bureau of Investigation of Thailand immediately launched a manhunt for the attacker.
The former police officer, however, fled the daycare in a car and hit several pedestrians, according to the colonel. After the massacre, he killed his wife and his son, and finally committed suicide.

The attacker, identified as Panya Khamrabwas fired from his post as a police lieutenant colonel last year for a drug problem.
Khamrab was therefore facing trial on a drug charge and had been in court hours before the shooting, a police spokesman told the local radio station. ThaiPBSin statements collected by the agency Reuters.

Thailand’s Central Bureau of Investigation earlier posted a flyer on its Facebook page showing a photo of the former police officer as a convict who was intensely wanted by the justice of that country.
Thailand is one of the countries in the world with the highest number of weapons in circulation, but despite this, massacres of this type are rare.

In 2020, an army officer carried out an attack on a shopping center in Nakhon Rachasima, in the interior of the country, causing 29 deaths. The 31-year-old author was killed by the security forces after a deadly journey of almost 17 hours. He had gone into action after arguing with a superior.

The international press points out that this Thursday’s massacre perpetrated by Khamrab is one of the most serious recorded in a school in the world, apart from armed conflicts or terrorist attacks.
