The Tg3 crew in Lebanon attacked this morning. The journalist Lucia Goracci and the operator Marco Nicois were attacked a few kilometers from Sidon. The driver, a heart patient, died of a heart attack. The crew’s car, which travels in Lebanon with all permits, was threatened and chased by a group of people on motorbikes. The driver, Ahmad, fell ill: an ambulance intervened and help was provided. The driver died, to the pain and shock of Goracci and Nicois.
The story
“We were in Jiyeh, north of Sidon, on the site of a bombing that occurred two nights ago“, said Goracci. “We were filming without problems, a man threw himself towards the operator trying to snatch the camera from him. We protected Marco and got back in the car to get away, other people arrived. The man” who tried to snatch the camera “threw a stone. We left, this man chased us. When we stopped at a petrol station, this man snatched the keys from the driver and tried to break the camera by entering through the windows.”
“Nobody came to help us. Ahmad tried to get his keys back and at that point he collapsed to the ground. The ambulance arrived, we rushed to the hospital: they told us that he had died after long attempts to resuscitate him. Ahmad had worked with the RAI offices in Beirut and Jerusalem for many years. Marco, who is here with me, and I have no words to describe his human depth and sweetness”, concluded the journalist.
