Singer Áurea Martins is the new interviewee of the series Depoimentos Cariocas, created by the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro, an organ of the Secretariat of Government and Integrity of the city hall, to record memories and experiences of personalities who were born or live in the capital. This November, the series reaches its seventh edition, after being inaugurated, in May of this year, with the testimony of writer and journalist Zuenir Ventura. In June, it was the turn of anthropologist Roberto DaMatta, followed by writer and composer Nei Lopes, in July, by the former mayor of Rio Saturnino Braga (August), by educator Terezinha Saraiva (September) and by writer and journalist Ruy Castro (October ).
The interview with Áurea Martins can be checked from the next 16th, at 17:00, at YouTube from the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro. At 81 years of age, the singer speaks of her more than 60 years of career to the coordinator of Cultural Promotion of the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro, Pedro Paulo Malta, with the participation of the institution’s president, historian Rosa Maria Araujo. The testimony had guests such as singer and composer Zélia Duncan, poet and producer Hermínio Bello de Carvalho and pianist Zé Maria Rocha.
The singer began singing at the age of 19 in the Campo Grande neighborhood, west of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Áurea recalled nightclubs where he was present with his voice of crooner orchestra, such as Antonino and the Teclado, later Mistura Fina, both located in the Lagoa district; Drink, in Copacabana; 706, in Leblon; and Number One, in Ipanema, where he shared the microphone with the then newcomer Djavan, who had just arrived from Maceió, in the 1970s. In 1969, the program A Grande Chance, directed by Flávio Cavalcanti on TV Tupi, projected Áurea Martins as one of the revelations of that year.
The victory guaranteed Áurea a contract with the RCA Victor label, where he made his debut on a compact disc, in 1969, and the LP O amor em paz (1972), recorded with arrangements by Luiz Eça. She would only resume her phonographic career in the 21st century, with acclaimed albums such as Iluminante, Depontahead and Up to sang, all released by Biscoito Fino. This latest CD earned her the 2009 Brazilian Music Award, beating Marisa Monte and Rosa Passos in the Best Singer category.
