During the event “We, Robot” inspired by the story “I, Robot” by Isaac Asimov, Elon Musk revealed Tesla’s future innovations. Among these, the Cybercaba self-driving robotaxis scheduled for “before 2027” at a price of less than $30,000. Musk also presented the Robovanan innovative means of transport for fourteen people.
Tesla robotaxi Cybercab, features
The Cybercab is one two-seater coupe with vertically opening doors, located halfway between the Model 3 and the Cybertruck. The front and rear lights recall the design of the Cybertruck, while the nose and wheel arches are inspired by the sports sedan.
It features no wing mirrors or door handles, and surprisingly, it does without charging socketsince it uses the induction chargingsimilar to that of smartphones. This means that it will be sufficient to park the vehicle on an induction charging station to recharge it.
Internally, the design is minimal, with just a large infotainment screen and without steering wheel or pedals. The tailgate opens onto a large luggage compartment, covered in fabric and with a regular shape.
Tesla robotaxi autonomous driving
The main feature of the Cybercab is autonomous driving in safety, respecting all regulations. Experts in AI and autonomous vehicles have expressed doubts about Tesla’s approach, which relies exclusively on cameras and artificial intelligence, compared to competitors such as Waymowhich use a combination of radar and LIDAR. Additionally, there are uncertainties regarding Robotaxi’s business model and operations. We will see later if there will be other details on the autonomous driving functions.
During the event, in fact, Musk did not provide details on the technical specifications of the Cybercab, such as autonomy, battery capacity, engine power or performance. There’s no information on how the robotaxi service or business model will work, but Musk speculated that fleet companies could purchase Cybercabs to use them as current ride-hailing services. Uber And Lyft.
Price, how much does Tesla’s robotaxi cost
Elon Musk announced that the Cybercab will be sold for less than $30,000a very competitive price compared to the Model 3, which starts at $42,490.
Musk also said that the Cybercab’s operating costs will be around 20 cents per milecompared to a current dollar for taxis, while the Robovan will cost just 5 cents per mile.
Tesla Robovan autonomous bus
Tesla also presented the Robovan, a self-driving bus that can also transport goods.
Elon Musk introduced the vehicle on stage, emphasizing his futuristic design with five LED strips and hidden wheels that make it seem suspended. Musk said one goal is to change the appearance of streets to reflect the future.
The Robovan is equipped with sliding doors and can accommodate up to fourteen passengers, with screens at the ends and electric trunks both front and rear.
The images show the Robovan used in various contexts, such as school buses, mobile workshops, formal cars and food trucks. However, no technical details, operational specifications or timing for its market launch are currently available.
