The industrial expansion process of Tesla, with the American brand specializing in the production of electric cars that will open a new plant for the assembly of components in Canada. The announcement was made by Frank Scarpitti, the mayor of Markham, Ontario, just north of Toronto, who has announced the intentions of the American company to open a new production site in the city. “I am pleased to share that Tesla Canada joins our already strong automotive and technology ecosystem by locating a manufacturing facility in the city of Markham”, wrote the mayor Scarpitti in a tweet posted on the official profile. “The plant will be the first Tesla Canada-branded manufacturing site in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment for use at Gigafactories located around the world in battery manufacturing.”
The mayor did not provide further details, but the automaker recently bought Canadian Hibar, a company engaged in production of pumps used in high capacity battery packs which Tesla will need for its new 4680 cells that will be the basis of the accumulators. Tesla declined to comment on the mayor’s tweet, but Senior Vice President Andrew Baglino said on Battery Day that “vertical integration” with Hibar and other companies would allow them to build batteries faster and increase cell production. .
Tesla currently builds 4680 batteries in its pilot factory in California and intends to build them in its next factories in Texas and Berlin. The new accumulators are considered essential to Tesla’s plan to build a more compact and affordable vehicle, lowering the list cost to about $ 25,000. Five times larger than the 1865 and 2170 cells that Panasonic currently supplies to Tesla, the 4680s have fewer cells to power electric vehicles, which means fewer parts for battery packs. The cells, however, are prone to overheating, requiring an improved cooling system.
