We recently told how Tesla decided to shelve the launch of the so-called Model 2, low-cost electric vehicles, to focus on the development of automated driving robotaxis. All confirmed obviously, even if the American car manufacturer wanted to reassure us that between this year and the beginning of next year it will introduce on the market new electric models.
New Tesla offensive
In particular, he will do it using his own current platforms and production lines. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, at the moment did not want to release further details about these new electric models, limiting himself to letting it be known that they will be rather convenient EVs that will start production at the latest at the beginning of 2025. But not only that: we also know that these same models would be built on Tesla's current production lines, and would use aspects of both the current platform and a next-generation platform.
Higher prices
What does this mean? That Tesla may have to deal with less cost reduction than previously expected, and that these new models almost certainly they will cost a little more than the so-called Model 2 would have cost, so $25,000. Setting aside that project does not mean having worked for nothing: Tesla has made it clear that the development work carried out on the next generation low-cost electric vehicle is transferable to the vehicles that the US automaker itself plans to release early next year.
From Model 2 to the next EVs
“We're trying not to throw away all that engineering work. We will take it and reuse it,” commented Tesla's technical chief, Lars Moravy, stating that the company will thus avoid the risk of investing in a production process revolutionary. “I think we've already said everything we needed to on this front”Musk added, answering the question of whether the new vehicles will be completely new models or modifications to existing vehicles.
