Three Israeli security guards have been killed in a shooting early Sunday on the Allenby or King Hussein Bridge, which separates the occupied West Bank from Jordan across the Jordan River, authorities said.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said on social media that it received the first call at 9:55 a.m. (local time). Upon arrival, they found three people with gunshot wounds, but were unable to save their lives. “We found them unconscious on the ground, without a pulse or breathing, with gunshot wounds. Together with the IDF (Israeli army) medical team, we made resuscitation efforts, but unfortunately we had to declare them dead,” it added.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) shot dead the perpetrator, who was identified as a “terrorist” from Jordan. Upon arriving at the area, he got out of the truck he was driving and opened fire on the officers guarding the crossing before being shot dead.
Jordan’s Interior Ministry has confirmed that an investigation has been opened into the incident, according to the official Petra news agency. Official sources cited by the Palestinian news agency WAFA have indicated that the crossing has been temporarily closed.
Offensive
The attack comes as Israel has stepped up major military operations in recent weeks in the West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.
Violence between Palestinians on the one hand and the Israeli army and settlers on the other has escalated in this territory since October 7, when the war broke out in the Gaza Strip triggered by the Hamas attack in southern Israel.
According to the Health Ministry, at least 662 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since then by the Israeli army or settlers.
At least 23 Israelis, including several soldiers and police officers, were killed in Palestinian attacks in the same period, according to Hebrew data.
