Marmaris Mayor Mehmet Oktay told TV that the fire started at three different locations, leading authorities to suspect arson may have been the cause of the fires.
Earlier that day, it was reported that the evacuation of guests and employees of hotels in Marmaris began. Around 13:00 (coinciding with Moscow time), a fire broke out in the vicinity of the resort town of Marmaris, which engulfed a forest, located in close proximity to city quarters and a number of hotel complexes. The fires are extinguished by five helicopters, one aircraft and 30 fire engines.
The Russian Consulate General in Antalya is investigating the current situation with Russian tourists in Marmaris through official channels, the ministry said.
On Thursday evening, the mayor of Bodrum Ahmet Aras said that a forest fire in the area of the city had been extinguished. Tourists return to their hotels. The official noted that no one was injured in Bodrum.
