The Pole will play for a place in the final against Aryna Sabalenka.
Tennis the number one player in the women’s world rankings Iga Swiatek has advanced to the semifinals of the US Open for the first time in his career. Poland’s Swiatek defeated the USA, ranked eighth in the tournament, in the quarterfinals Jessica Pegula set 6–3, 7–6 (7–4).
In the semifinals, Swiatek will face the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenkan, who is ranked sixth in the tournament. Sabalenka defeated the Czech Republic in her own quarter-final Karolína Plíšková 6–1, 7–6 (7–4).
“It means a lot to me to be in the semifinals for the first time,” Swiatek said.
“I am very happy because I have worked hard but kept my expectations low. The match was very tight.”
The semifinal match was tinged with mistakes. Swiatek broke his opponent’s pass seven times and Pegula six times. A total of 61 easy fouls were recorded. Swiatek wasted several opportunities to seal the victory for himself, but in the end was sharper in the decisive moments.
In another in the semifinals of the women’s singles, they will meet France Caroline Garcia and Tunisian Ons Jabeur. None of the players who made it to the semifinals has previously celebrated a singles championship in New York.
Swiatek, 21, is a two-time French Open champion. He won in Paris 2020 and this year. In other grand slam tournaments, he has not reached the final match. Last year, he reached the fourth round at the US Open.
