On February 5, Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev withdrew from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament in Rotterdam, where he was supposed to defend his tournament title. Instead, Russia's second racket, Russian Andrei Rublev, will play.
As Medvedev himself explained, the reason for his withdrawal from the tournament was that he had not yet recovered sufficiently from the previous competition – the Australian Open.
“Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from Rotterdam. After an incredibly difficult and long run in Australia, my body (and especially my right leg) was not yet recovered enough to defend the title. I love playing in Rotterdam, I have a long history with this tournament, and I’m really looking forward to returning in 2025,” the tennis player was quoted as saying on the official website competitions.
Medvedev is the current champion of the tournament in Rotterdam. In the final of the competition in 2023, he defeated Italian Jannik Sinner (5:7, 6:2, 6:2), notes “Sport Express”.
Earlier, on January 28, in the final of the Australian Open, Medvedev lost to his opponent from Italy, Sinner (6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 4:6, 3:6). The tennis player explained to reporters the reason for his defeat by the fact that after two sets he felt tired, unlike the Italian. He also said that he worked a lot with a physiotherapist, who did a lot of work to ensure that the Russian went on the court.
On January 29, it was reported that after losing in the Australian Open final, Medvedev retained third place in the ATP rankings. The Australian Open took place from January 14 to 28.
