Tennis | Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open

Last year, Sabalenka had reached the second place of the same grand slam tournament and in 2022 and 2023 to the semifinals.

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka has defeated an American in the final match of the US Open Jessica Pegula set 7–5, 7–5.

It is Sabalenka’s third grand slam victory and first US Open victory, playing with a neutral status. Previous victories Sabalenka has grabbed at the Australian Open.

In the exciting final, Pegula, who lost to the world number two, was in a grand slam final for the first time. Pegula is ranked sixth in the world ranking.

However, Pegula did not give in easily, but fought herself from a 0–3 deficit to the lead of the second set, before Sabalenka stormed past her.

“I am speechless. I was so close to winning the US Open so many times and I finally got it,” the 26-year-old Sabalenka said after the match.

Last year he reached second place and in 2022 and 2023 he reached the semifinals.

The final played in New York was watched by 23,000 spectators. Among others, the winner of the 100-meter Olympic gold in Paris was seen in the audience Noah Lylesan NBA star Stephen Curry as well as multiple Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
