Next week we can expect summer again. The temperature is rising and it remains virtually dry again.
After a somewhat less warm period with temperatures that match this time of year, the temperature will rise again after the weekend. “In the course of the week, the supply of very warm air from southern Europe will even start again,” says meteorologist Wilfred Janssen of weather plaza. “Drought also remains a problem, although the chance of showers increases towards the weekend.”
It could warm up quite a bit in the course of tomorrow. In the afternoon temperatures between 23 degrees at the sea to regionally 28 degrees deep inland are possible. The air is relatively humid, so cumulus clouds are easily formed. Some specimens grow into a shower, but in many places it will probably remain dry.
Tomorrow evening, the west and northwest of the country will have to deal with more clouds from the west. It is possible that showers will occasionally fall in those regions in the second half of the evening and in the night to Tuesday. Elsewhere in the country it will remain dry.
On Tuesday it will be more cloudy, especially in the morning with a few short showers spread over the country. In the afternoon it will be almost dry with more sun. Inland it can then again become warm in summer with 25 to 28 degrees.
A lot warmer
From Wednesday it will be a lot warmer for a number of days. “Then the supply of warm air from the south will start,” says Janssen. In most places in our country it will be warm in the summer with 25 degrees or warmer on Wednesday, probably just not on the Wadden. temperature is even close to 30 degrees. The sun shines a lot between some cumulus clouds and the wind is only weak from the south. The air is relatively humid, so it also feels sweltering hot.
Thursday will be even warmer. In the south of the country, the temperature can then rise to values well above 30 degrees. Maximums near 30 degrees are also possible in the middle and east of the country. In the north it is slightly less warm, but still summery.
The increasing temperatures and the lack of rain ensure that the drought will intensify again in the coming days. Especially in the east and southeast, where last week – in contrast to the west and north – hardly any rain fell, the drought is intensifying. The west and north have some relief from drought after last week’s showers, but there too the extreme drought will become more noticeable during the week.
Cooler air
On Saturday, a northwesterly wind will rise in more and more places, bringing cooler air from the North Sea into our country. In the northwestern coastal area, therefore, the maxima will probably remain at values around 22 degrees, while inland it will still be warm in summer with 25 to 28 degrees. The weather picture is then quite sunny, but inland you still have to take into account a rain or thunderstorm.
This is how bad the drought will be in the coming time
Last Wednesday’s rain only caused a slight rise in groundwater levels in the wettest areas. In the driest areas, groundwater levels have continued to fall towards record low values. While the grass turns green again in the areas where it has rained well, the trees lose their leaves. Trees take root deeply and deeper in the ground it has remained bone dry. In the absence of soil moisture, trees shed their leaves for protection. So there is no early autumn, but the drought is now increasingly having an impact on the trees in our country.
Not only the groundwater has not benefited from the showers of last Wednesday, but the river water levels have also not improved. For example, the water level in the Rhine will continue to fluctuate around the record low level that was reached this week. This is because too little rain fell in the catchment areas of the major rivers.
At the moment there is a lot of rain in Switzerland, but this will be largely retained upstream in Switzerland and Germany and possibly only lead to a slight rise in water levels in the Dutch Rhine weeks later. Also, the tributaries of the Rhine will first have to fill before a rise in the main river can occur. We explain how that works here.
Big differences
We can see from the regional differences that the national precipitation deficit is not everything. Especially in the west of Zeeland, the west of South Holland, in North Holland, Utrecht, Friesland and Groningen, tens of millimeters of rain fell on Wednesday. In Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland and Overijssel, only a few millimeters of rain fell in most places and almost nothing in a few places. Precisely in these areas there was already a precipitation deficit of 270 to 300 millimeters. Due to the drought and heat, blue-green algae occurs in various places, which is why a spray ban is sometimes imposed for that reason.
In Zeeland and the southwest of South Holland, the precipitation deficit is still above 300 millimeters, despite the rain on Wednesday. In Westdorpe in Zeeland, the shortage is even 335 millimeters and in Hoek van Holland the shortage is about 330 millimeters. In Friesland and on the eastern Wadden the precipitation deficit is the smallest with 180 to 220 millimeters.
