Television review The case of the excellent British series Stephen Lawrence tells the story of a police attempt to correct their own mistakes

The series is based on a true case in 2006, the investigation of which is followed by fiction. A group of white men stabbed a black young man, and the culprits were not convicted.

“Are you waited a long time, ”the attending lawyer asks Neville Lawrence. “13 years,” this replies. So many years have passed since the killing of his son after the British series The case of Stephen Lawrence (2021) begins.

Neville’s father (Hugh Quarshie) and Doreenmother (great Sharlene Whyte) is a long wait for police action. In 2006, it is clear that London police have made bad and intentional mistakes in investigating the stabbing of a black young man. Three investigations have been carried out with no results, although eyewitnesses have identified the criminals immediately.

At the beginning of the series, the case will once again be seized by a new director of investigation, the criminal commissioner Clive Driscoll. He intends to make up for the mistakes made by his colleagues by bringing the culprits to justice.

Three-piece the series is based on a book written by a real Driscoll. It is based on a true case, the investigation of which is followed by the series through fiction. Driscoll (Steve Coogan) herself, but Doreen Lawrence, the victim ‘s mother, also becomes a key figure.

Where Driscoll is an outspoken basic good who, in his spare time, sings to the elderly and coaches football players, Lawrence feels fresher as a character. The middle-class woman has a deep suspicion of the police and shows no emotion – except for ill-concealed contempt.

The screenwriters of the series are father and son Frank and Joe Cottrell Boyce. The former is known, among other things, for movies Hilary and Jackie (1998), 24 Hour Party People (2002) and A Cock and Bull Story (2005) as a screenwriter.

The duo the work is flawless. The series does not exaggerate, does not feel, and does not return to the violence of retrospect, but it packs in a lot of emotional power.

In one of the most impressive scenes, police reconstruct a crime in a room where a white police officer shows the camera that he is hitting and kicking a black police officer, following the victim’s injuries. The clinical way of presenting violence seems more realistically described.

The focus is not on crime but investigation. Driscoll’s work is hampered by the police department’s past mistakes and inability to investigate. At first the case is not investigated properly and later it is wondered if it is still being investigated.

Current events themes such as transparency in government and structural racism are naturally intertwined into the story. The scarcity of the narrative further emphasizes its true nature.

The “based on true events” statement has lost its weight in an era of true crime and confession, but The case of Stephen Lawrence in the series, you feel it again.
