Television | Netflix’s users grew more than expected, one factor being the popularity of the Korean series Squid Game

At the end of the previous quarter, the streaming giant had a total of about 214 million subscribers, of which 4.4 million had been caught in July-September.

Streaming service Netflix’s user growth in the third quarter exceeded forecasts. In July – September, the service gained almost 4.4 million new subscribers, Netflix said in its interim report published on Tuesday.

At the end of the quarter, the streaming giant had a total of approximately 214 million subscribers. The majority of the recent growth comes from the Asia-Pacific region, where a total of 2.2 million new subscribers are reported.

South Korea’s hit series Squid Game contributes to Netflix’s subscriber growth, says financial news agency Bloomberg. Netflix invites the series released in September in its investor letter to the greatest TV series ever.

In Squid Game, badly indebted people are offered the opportunity to get rich and get rid of their problems by playing games familiar to them from their childhood. According to the company, 142 million households have watched the rather violent and gloomy Korean survival drama in the first four weeks.

“The extent of Squid Game’s popularity is truly incredible,” the company whispers in its investor letter, saying the series was Netflix’s most viewed in as many as 94 countries.

The series has also been strongly featured in internet memes and since the beginning of social media in Tiktok.

Netflix’s July-September result was approximately $ 1.45 billion. Revenue increased 16 percent year-over-year to $ 7.5 billion.

Despite the increase in the number of users, the company’s share fell by more than one per cent on the secondary market.

Of the year during the first half, Netflix’s supply was narrower than usual due to production delays related to the corona pandemic. Now, however, the company seems to have benefited from the easing of the corona situation. The company says the new series released during the previous quarter had a positive impact on the company’s situation.

Netflix says in its investor letter that the last quarter of the year is expected to be the best in the company to date.

Of Netflix’s original series, which returned from the break, the largest viewership was gathered in the new seasons of the Spanish hit Mint and the American drama comedy Sex Education, which followed the bank robbers. 69 million households looked at the Mint and 55 million at Sex Education.

In its investor letter, the company also says it will move later this year to open viewer numbers for its series for hours viewed rather than the number of user accounts that viewed them.

Netflix also says it will continue its efforts to expand the company’s offering toward video games. The company says it focuses primarily on mobile devices. In terms of games, however, the company’s plans are not expected to bear real fruit until years from now.

Goodbye despite the news, Netflix has also recently received criticism. An American comedian released by the company this month Dave Chappellen on the one hand, the program has raised concerns about freedom of speech and censorship, while the company’s own employees have branded the program transphobic.

In his recent comedy show The Closer, Chappelle responds to his critics who have accused him of mocking transgender people in the past. In his program, the comedian declares, among other things, “gender to be a fact” and accuses sexual and gender minorities of being “too sensitive.”

Sexual and gender minorities have condemned the program, but Netflix has so far remained behind its decisions and has no plans to remove the program from the service. However, according to the news agency AFP, the streaming giant has been in the midst of the fiercest controversy in its history to date.
