MILAN, Italy (Reuters) – Telecom Italia this week began talks with KKR about the takeover bid presented in November by the U.S. private equity fund, sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.
Telecom Italia decided on Sunday that newly appointed chief executive Pietro Labriola and chairman of the board of directors Salvatore Rossi must start formal discussions with KKR over the offer which values the Italian telecoms group at 10.8 billion euros, excluding debt.
In a letter sent this week, Telecom Italia requested clarification on KKR’s plans for the telecoms group and the structure of its offer, sources familiar with the matter said.
KKR is expected to respond to Telecom Italia’s requests for clarification in the coming days, the sources added.
A first meeting between Telecom Italia executives and KKR representatives could be scheduled by the end of March, although no date has yet been decided, one of the sources added.
