Patients with severe COVID-19 subsequently they may experience various kinds of difficulties, among which, as it turned out, there may be tooth loss.
According to the newspaper, the victims spoke about the problems with their teeth and gums on social networks. In addition to tooth loss, some infected have reported sore gums following COVID-19. Most of the patients who reported unusual symptoms had no previous dental problems.
Vascular biologist and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation William Lee explained that coronavirus interferes with the functioning of the circulatory system.
“Your jaw is very saturated with blood vessels,” the expert said, adding that the inside of your teeth is filled with them. It is the problems with blood flow, according to the expert, that lead to tooth loss.
Lee noted that such conclusions confirm the words of some patients that the teeth fell out without blood, which means that blood access to them was already blocked. The biologist warned that vascular damage from COVID-19 persists even after recovery, so that teeth may begin to fall out after the remaining symptoms of the coronavirus disappear.
In turn, the director of global health in New York, Eric Chioe-Pena, noted that it is too early to talk about the identification of a new symptom, while there is not enough data.
At the same time, a study by Spanish scientists conducted in the summer showed that one of the early symptoms of coronavirus infection can be a severe rash on the oral mucosa. It appeared in some of the observed patients two days before other consequences. Doctors did not say unequivocally that the cause was precisely COVID-19.
