About diseases recovering Helsinki children can now study from home with the help of school robots.
At the beginning of the school year, Helsinki acquired three robots, which allow students to see their class and communicate with their teacher and classmates.
The robot can be used, for example, by children who, after hospital treatment, are not yet able to return to school due to the risk of infection, for example, but could otherwise participate in teaching.
“The robot helps them to get to their own school,” says the hospital school’s special teacher Sophie Mannerheim in the city’s press release Ina Kivalo.
At schools there is an obligation to organize teaching even for students recovering from illnesses, because compulsory education does not end with illness.
Pupil can control the robot sitting on the desk with a pad. When he wants to point, a green light turns on the robot. If the student needs to rest, the light that comes on is blue. In addition, he can show the robot his emotional states – pensive, happy, sad, normal – with the help of emojis.
Robot according to the city, can facilitate the student’s return to school education, especially if the absence has been prolonged and the return to school is stressful.
“Community, communication and maintaining friendships are important. [Oppilas] can get involved in the community, for example during recess, trips and various school events,” says Kivalo.
“The student gets something else to think about when he does the same thing as others and gets to participate in nice joint activities with his classmates. It also reminds the rest of the class that we have such a student. And the students see that the technology is real and can be used in everyday life.”
Robots is in use in three schools in Helsinki. HS told last year about school robots in Espoo.
