Team Asobi did not initially expect to be able to insert 150 characters in Astro Bot. He thought that other development studios would not have participated in the project with much enthusiasm. Instead, things went very differently and the game became the best celebration of 30 years of PlayStation that could be given.
Nicolas Doucet, the manager of Team Asobi, explained the situation, initially reiterating the objectives of Astro Bot: “For veteran players, we hope to offer them the fun of action platform games and a sense of nostalgiaas the title is full of homages to PlayStation’s 30-year history. With the appearance of characters like PaRappa, I hope players will feel a surge of joy and nostalgia as they meet these familiar faces.”
So much history
Naturally the development team has not forgotten about new players: “I vividly remember the first time I played a video game: it was incredibly fun and left a lasting impression on me. If Astro Bot was someone’s first video game and it sparked the same joy and excitement that I felt, I would be thrilled.”
Doucet then explained how he and his team managed to include so much of PlayStation history in Astro Bot: “We collaborated very closely with all of PlayStation Studios. When we shared our concept with the studio heads and the game creators, their reactions were overwhelmingly positive. Initially, I thought we would only be able to feature around 50 of the 150 characters we wanted, but to our surprise, the studios unanimously agreed to have all 150 characters! In addition to our own PlayStation Studios, we were also fortunate to collaborate with third-party publishers.” The reference is to all those characters included in the game, whose intellectual properties are not Sony’s, such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.
For the rest, we remind you that Astro Bot is an exclusive title for PlayStation 5. We do not know if it will be released on other platforms in the future, such as PC. If you are interested in knowing more, read our review.
