Next Sunday (28), candidates for the National High School Examination (Enem) 2021 will take math and natural science tests. To do well, teachers interviewed by Brazil Agency recommend that the participant have a testing strategy. Those who didn’t do well on the first day of application can still recover the grade.
Having an exam strategy is to define in advance how you will manage your time and how you will resolve the issues. Danilo Capelari, adviser in the physics area of the Positivo Teaching System, is to start with the easiest questions. “Do a first reading of the test and answer the easiest questions. This guarantees proficiency. On a second reading, devote more time to the most difficult issues”, he says.
Capelari explains that ensuring easy questions is a strategy to meet the criteria for correcting the tests, by Item Response Theory. By TRI, the grade is not calculated taking into account only the number of correct questions, but also the consistency of the participant’s answers to the set of questions that make up the test. TRI estimates the difficulty of the questions and assesses the participants’ knowledge.
If a student gets all the easy questions wrong and hits a difficult one, his score on that question will be lower than that of a student who got both the easiest and the hard questions right. In the first case, the system can understand that the participant guessed the answer.
“Look at the questions, give them a first read to effectively choose the items, starting with those you are most sure of getting right. As they are large texts, I don’t think it’s appropriate to venture out to explain everything or to do it continuously, from the first to the last question”, complements José Carlos de Medeiros, professor of mathematics at Colégio Matriz Educação.
Attention to the statement
Another tip is to pay attention to the texts and statements of the question. “Sometimes the questions [que são de múltipla escolha] have more than one alternative that is conceptually correct. The big question is to respond according to what the statement is asking for. The alternative may be conceptually correct, but it is not what the statement asks for. When it comes to text interpretation, it is important that students are focused on asking the question, on the utterance”, explains Capelari.
In the final stretch, just a few days before the race, Medeiros recommends that the students rest, so they can be calm, but also make a last review. “I always think that the best way is the middle way, I think it’s worth reviewing, but studying to exhaustion is not the best solution emotionally to take a test”
One way to review the content is to ask questions from Enem tests from previous years. “I find it interesting, for those who have the opportunity, to review some questions from the various test groups, from Enem PPL [para pessoas privadas de liberdade], Digital Enem, in Libras [Língua Brasileira de Sinais], because they have different questions, but they come from the same bank. It’s nice to train the characteristics of the test”, says the professor. All question books and templates from previous years are available on the site of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep).
still can be recovered
Last Sunday (21), candidates took the language, humanities and writing tests. For those who think it didn’t go very well, the teachers say that you can still get the grade back. “You can’t be discouraged, not doing very well at Enem is relative. As the test follows the TRI, a lot of students happen to get 25 questions right and get the same grade as someone who got an 8 or 9 right, because of the test strategy”, says Capelari.
Medeiros agrees: “There is no such thing as a crystal ball. The result did not come out and, mainly, as we have 26% absent, stop trying I think it’s not a smart thing. Since it’s within the process, it doesn’t hurt to go there and try, because there’s absolutely nothing for sure”.
Official templates will be released for all races only next week, until December 1st.
Enem questions
To test their knowledge, students can access the free Enem questions gives Brazil Communication Company (EBC), a bank that gathers all Enem questions from 2009 to 2020. In the system, you can choose which areas of knowledge you want to study. The bank selects the questions at random. More information about Enem coverage, which includes proofreading, is available here.
Follow Agência Brasil’s coverage of Enem 2021:
Enem selects students for public higher education vacancies through the Unified Selection System (Sisu), for scholarships in private institutions through the University for All Program (ProUni), and serves as a parameter for the Student Financing Fund (Fies). The results can also be used to enter Portuguese educational institutions that have an agreement with Inep.
