The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) rejected the appeals of the Russian Football Federation (FUR) and the clubs Zenit, Sochi, CSKA Moscow and Dynamo Moscow against the decision by FIFA and UEFA to exclude all Russian national teams and teams from their competitions until further notice, due to the war in Ukraine.
The CAS panel considered that FIFA and UEFA they had to respond to an unforeseen circumstance and that they did so within the provisions of their statutes and regulations due to the “need for a safe and orderly development of football events for the rest of the world”.

For the court it is “Unfortunate that the current military operations in Ukraine, for which Russian football teams and players bear no responsibility, have had such a negative effect on them and on Russian football in general”, although he considered them necessary for the “safe and orderly development of football events for the rest of the world”.

“The escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and public and government responses around the world, created unforeseen circumstances to which the
FIFA and UEFA they had to answer. In determining that the Russian teams and clubs should not participate in competitions while such circumstances persist, they acted within the scope of the discretion granted to them by their respective statutes and regulations,” the CAS added.
The Russian Federation appealed the decision taken by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee andl February 28 after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the clubs after the UEFA resolution of last May 2.
All complaints were assigned to the same panel, which held hearings with the parties via videoconference on July 5 and 11.
