The privatization of Sabesp and the privatization of the Port of Santos was once again debated between the candidates for the government of São Paulo, Fernando Haddad (PT) and Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans). The former Minister of Infrastructure, describing himself as a person who “values the role of the private sector”, stated that the privatization of the Port of Santos will bring investment to the region.
“I’ve already seen a statement from you saying that you are against the privatization of Porto, and I wanted to understand why this privatization is in danger with the Lula government”, he questioned. Haddad said he was not against privatization, but considered that Tarcísio’s desire is to privatize the port authority. “I want you to give me an example in the world where the privatization of the port authority worked”, said PT.
Haddad also criticized the former Minister of Infrastructure’s lack of clear position against the privatization of Sabesp. “I think you are going to privatize because you already said you were going to privatize, then you said you weren’t going to, you went back, then you said again that you were thinking, but we don’t know what you want to do with the largest state patrimony in São Paulo “, said.
The PT member also said that handing over the company to private capital would lead to a rise in the value of the water bill, just as the “bad privatization” of the electricity sector in the 1990s did to the electricity bill.
Tarcísio, in response, compared the privatization of Sabesp to that of Eletrobras, and said that it was possible to reduce the water bill by bringing private funds to the state-owned company, once again praising the Bolsonaro government. The former minister also stated that, if elected, his government will be one of “continuing what is good and giving speed to what is lacking”, he said.
Having exposed Tarcísio’s promises, Haddad said he was disbelieving in relation to the realization of the projects mentioned by his opponent. According to him, it is necessary to reappropriate the budget. “I think no matter how good your intentions are, you won’t be able to get them off the ground simply because they’re not in the federal or state budget. There is no dialogue between the two budgets,” he declared.
