The anger of colleagues: “He was a stopgap, we are understaffed”
The case of the primary who died yesterday while he was visiting Giannuzzi hospital in Manduria is “unacceptable”. The Fnomceo, National Federation of Medical Orders, expresses condolences for the 61-year-old colleague Giovanni Buccoliero, struck down by an illness while working in the ward, and points the finger at the “dramatic shortage of health personnel” and the errors that have determined and fueled it. We cannot accept “that it is the operators who pay them with health and even with life”, declares the president Fnomceo Filippo Anelli, who recalled the deceased head physician by opening the National Council of the Federation today in Rome. “Proximity, on the part of the Fnomceo Central Committee and all the presidents of the Order, gathered today in the National Council, to the family of my colleague Giovanni Buccoliero”, says Anelli, and “closeness also to the president of the Order of Doctors of Taranto, Cosimo Nume, and to the entire Taranto medical community “.
“We have repeatedly highlighted the serious discomfort of doctors – underlines the president of the Orders – subjected to overwork, in infinite shifts, without the possibility of taking advantage of the rest periods provided for by law, or holidays. We raised what we called the ‘medical question’; we presented it to the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, and to the president of the Conference of Regions, Massimiliano Fedriga, in a dedicated conference. The incorrect planning of the Regions, together with the hiring block linked to the expenditure ceiling of the staff fund, which was stopped in 2004, has resulted in a dramatic shortage of personnel. “Mistakes that cannot be paid for by the health workers, urges Anelli.
“Safety at work is, for everyone, a constitutionally protected right”, he highlights. And “for doctors it must be all the more so – specifies the number one of Fnomceo – because it is a prerequisite for the safety of care. Where staff shortages are severe, it is better to close the hospital and concentrate professionals in other facilities, rather than witnessing dramatic consequences. “
