It would be nice if all the tanks in the world could be stopped simply by ranting the traffic rules. Even if unfortunately it will never be possible to obtain this beautiful utopia, there are those who have managed to “slow down” the transport of these means of war. This is the Polstrada, which at the barrier of Mercato San Severino, in the province of Salerno, blocked several trucks that were carrying five new generation tanks, model PzH 2000 (Panzerhaubitze 2000) of German manufacture. The vehicles were headed to Germany for an exercise (not to Ukraine as some initially assumed). The reason for the stop? The registration certificate and the transport authorization were missing.
According to reports from the main agencies, the tanks, 55 tons of weight and cost of 9 million euros each were stopped by the Naples traffic police, Nola detachment, between Sunday 26 and Monday 27 June. A normal check has turned into an impressive sequence of registered fines. The means of transport carrying 3 of the 5 tanks were not in order: depending on the vehicle, there was no registration certificate, inspection, authorization to drive exceptional transport. These trucks were sent back to Persano.
In any case, the Polstrada agents had been asked for support for the exceptional transport to the barrier. The operation, conducted by a private company in charge, envisaged transporting the tanks from the military district of Persano to Bologna, and then from there to the German direction. The Italian Defense Staff announced: “The vehicles were headed to Germany for an exercise. The transport of the vehicles coming from the military base of Persano di Salerno was the responsibility of a private company which, following checks carried out, was not in possession of correct documentation.“.
