From the financial data of Take Two information also emerges on several games cancelled by the company regarding ongoing projects: there would be 12 fewer titles in the programs, counting them compared to what was previously reported by the label, which however assured that these are “non-core” gamesif we can translate the concept of “core games” in this way.
The question would be confirmed by the fact that Take Two’s official plans speak of a total of 40 games expected for the end of the 2027 fiscal year, without including those that will derive from the next acquisition of Gearbox, which in fact represents a reduction of 12 titles compared to the 52 that the company itself had reported were in development by internal teams.
This doesn’t mean that all 12 games in question have actually been cancelled, because it’s possible that some will simply fall back outside the time limit used by Take-Two for defining medium-term programs, i.e. the fiscal year 2027.
Cost reduction first and foremost
In any case, the canceled titles do not belong to series considered main by the publisher, as he was keen to specify president Karl Slatoff during the meeting with the shareholders, in which he highlighted this maneuver to streamline the company’s internal projects.
“Our updated exit program reflects the actions of our recent release program cost reduction“, reported the president of Take-Two. “Through which we have canceled some games to focus our efforts and resources on franchises that we believe represent our best opportunities to achieve critical and commercial success.”
In any case, “these titles do not include any of our major franchises and were not expected to have any real impact on our revenue growth,” Slatoff explained, suggesting that the canceled ones were likely smaller projects.
The cost reduction program should lead to savings of 155 million dollars, CFO Lainie Goldstein also explained, which obviously unfortunately involves the reduction of projects and probably also of personnel, which is clearly not widely publicized among the financial results.
Last April, Take-Two announced its intention to cut 5% of its staff, or about 600 jobs.
