Russia, Tajani: “The ECB has gone too far on Unicredit’s exit”
“I am also worried about the stability of Italian companies operating in Russian territory, this applies to Unicredit and for Ariston“, but the inspection service of the ECB – which asked institutions such as Unicredit to accelerate their exit from the Federation – “has expanded a bit too much” and requires clarification from the European Justice.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said this, Antonio Tajaniin a press conference answering a question about the case of Unicredit which turned to the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding the terms set by the European Central Bank for the exit from Russia.
“The story Unicredit-ECB seems to repeat what happened a few years ago, when the same inspection service that is now asking Unicredit to leave Russia – not without economic damage – tried to force all Italian banks to sell their bad loans in a very short time”, he recalled Tajani.
“I opposed it because I thought the inspection service would expand a bit too much: so no war with the ECB, but asking for an exact interpretation of the rules by the European justice seems to me to be the right move”, he said, speaking at the press conference to present the ministerial Trade meeting of the G7 which will be held on July 16th and 17th in Villa San Giovanni.
“I am also concerned about the stability of Italian companies operating in Russian territory, this applies to Unicredit and to Ariston”, he added. “Nobody wants to support Russia”, concluded the minister, “but given that they are companies operating within the framework of sanctions“These companies cannot be asked to suffer damages.
