China is capable of blocking Taiwan’s main ports and airports to cut their transport connections, warned on Tuesday (9) the island’s defense ministry.
Taiwan lives under constant threat of a Chinese invasion, which sees the democratically governed island as a part of its territory that must be incorporated, including by force.
Beijing has increased the pressure, with incursions by military planes, since President Tsai Ing-wen took power in 2016. She considers the island to be a sovereign nation and not part of China.
Beijing has strengthened its ability to attack the island by air, sea and land, the Taiwanese defense ministry said in a biannual report published on Tuesday.
This capability includes imposing a “blockade on our main docks, airports and outbound flight routes, cutting off our lines of communication by air and sea,” the document states.
The report highlights that China can attack the entire territory of Taiwan with its arsenal of missiles, both ballistic and cruise, and strengthened its ability to carry out amphibious attacks against the island.
Taiwan’s defense ministry warned in October that military tensions with China are at their highest level in four decades, following incursions by Chinese military planes into the island’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
The sector is not the same as Taiwanese airspace, but it does include an area that overlaps with part of China’s Defense Identification Zone.
“Frequent threats of gray zone manipulation” by China, such as incursions by military planes and cyber attacks, are intended to “take Taiwan without combat,” the report adds.
