Two Russian Su-35 and six Syrian MiG-23 and MiG-29 aircraft simulated the confrontation of “enemy” warplanes and drones, according to the ministry, which said that the Syrian pilots dealt with them with cover and support from Russian warplanes.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense said in a statement: “All phantom targets were detected and completely destroyed, while air targets were bombed at night for the first time.” It also broadcast a video clip of warplanes, which it said had participated in the exercises.
This announcement came hours after the official Syrian TV announced that Israeli missiles had targeted Syrian army positions south of the capital, Damascus, causing material damage, but no casualties.
State television quoted an unnamed military official as saying that before midnight Monday, Israeli warplanes fired several missiles while flying over the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
He added that the Syrian air defenses shot down most of the missiles. There was no comment from Israel on the strike.
