The Pole wins in two sets against Halep and is the number 1 of the race, the Greek eliminates the reigning champion Badosa
The title in Indian Wells and the number 2 position in the WTA rankings. Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari will play a lot in tomorrow’s final (7pm Italian time): in California there will be a new champion and the ranking will be redesigned. In the semifinals, two tournament winners are eliminated: Simona Halep, defeated by Swiatek and champion in 2015, and Paula Badosa, stopped by Sakkari after winning last year. The Greek and the Polish will face each other for the fifth time in their careers: the first three challenges were won by Maria, Iga won a few weeks ago in the semi-final in Doha.

Doha, in fact. Tournament that Swiatek won in the final against Kontaveit: the Pole is one game away from becoming champion in two consecutive 1000s. Considering the semifinals reached in Adelaide and the Australian Open, for the 20-year-old (21 in May) this is a great start to the season: the Pole is the new number 1 of the race, she will be too in the event of a defeat against Sakkari. In the semifinals came the victory in two sets against Halep (7-6 6-4), but woe to think that things were simple: in both halves, the Pole found herself under a break. In the first, Halep served to close at 6-4 and then had two set points in the tie-break. From the victory of Roland Garros (September 2020) onwards, Iga has always won the finals played: four out of four.

For Sakkari it is instead the most important final of her career: the Greek is played for the first 1000 title. The number 6 in the world – in the event of a defeat against Swiatek will be third in the ranking – has inflicted on Badosa the first defeat in the main Indian draw. Wells after ten wins: 6-2 4-6 6-1. The Greek reaches the second final of the season after the one in St. Petersburg (defeat against Kontaveit) and goes in search of the second career title: her first and only one dates back to 2019, on the land of Rabat against Johanna Konta. Before the success against Badosa, Sakkari had lost all four finals played at level 1000. “So many people told me about this number on the semifinals, I never thought about it because I was confident that soon I would make it.”
