Swedish On Tuesday, the government presented its presentation on how it will strengthen its defense in the years 2025–2030.
With the decision, the wartime organization of the Swedish Defense Forces is, among other things, to be increased from 88,000 soldiers to 115,000 in 2030. In 2035, the number should be 130,000.
It is intended to train more conscripts for this purpose, 10,000 annually by 2030 and approximately 12,000 between 2032 and 2035.
The number of full army brigades in Sweden is being increased to four. In 2030, this work should be completed with approximately 5,000 soldiers in each brigade.
According to the Swedish government’s calculations, defense spending will increase to 2.6 percent of GDP in 2028, and this level will remain until 2030. This year, the level is 2.2 percent according to NATO’s calculation method.
“An armed attack against Sweden or our allies cannot be ruled out,” said the defense minister Paul Jonson at the press conference about the background assumptions of the defense decision.
Swedish also invests in equipment purchases.
The Navy’s Visby-class ships are being upgraded and armed with anti-aircraft missiles. At the same time, deliveries of the new Luleå-class surface combat ships are expected between 2025 and 2030.
The Air Force, on the other hand, will receive, among other things, the S106 Globaleye reconnaissance aircraft. The commissioning of the new Jas 39E machines will begin in autumn 2024.
Among other things, the ground forces are improving their anti-aircraft capability and investing in rocket launchers and drones.
In the defense decision Sweden’s NATO investments are also mentioned, such as sending Swedish soldiers to Latvia’s so-called FLF forces, i.e. multinational NATO forces.
Sweden’s intention to be a framework state in the FLF model of NATO forces planned for Finland is also mentioned.
However, no more is said about it.
Swedish also invests in the so-called total national defense. It is planned to invest 37.5 billion kroner (about 3.3 billion euros) more in civil defense by 2030.
