The wave of frost and extreme cold continues to hit Northern Europe and in particular Scandinavia, creating chaos and inconveniences especially in transport and on the roads. But not only. There are also power outages and problems with water pipes freezing.
Today in Swedenwhere the temperature is around -9 degrees, many trains were cancelled. In Stockholm, 36 trains were cancelled. “It's the weather situation that makes everything more difficult. A lot of ice is forming and before we can intervene on the trains they need to be de-iced. It can take hours”, explains a spokesperson for the Swedish State Railways, Jonas Olsson to 'Dagens Nyheter'. “It's the same situation we've had in the last few weeks. The trains that are canceled today were canceled in advance, so there are no stranded passengers,” he added. The Sj railway company plans a reduction of train departures also in the future, at least until January 21st. The situation on the roads is also chaotic. Due to a snowstorm, the E10 between Björkliden and Riksgränsen in northern Sweden was closed in both directions until Monday evening. In Oslo, Norway, the train station was opened to help the homeless cope with the cold wave and yesterday hosted over 30 people.
The cold wave has been hitting the Scandinavian countries for days. In Oslo, in recent days, the temperature has dropped below -30 degrees, for the first time in the history of the Norwegian capital and last week in the village of Kvikkjokk, in the Arctic region of Sweden, the mercury dropped to -43.6 degrees, the lowest temperature recorded in the country in January in the last 25 years. Extremely cold temperatures, snow and gale-force winds caused thedisruption of transport throughout the Nordic region, with several bridges closed and some rail and ferry services suspended. Police in Denmark have urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel as wind and snow hit northern and western parts of the country.
