Swedish A stabbing took place in Visby on the island of Gotland on Wednesday after 14:00 local time.

The man is suspected of having stabbed the woman, who suffered serious injuries. The police are investigating the matter as attempted murder. The police arrested the suspect. The ambulance gave the stabbed woman first aid on the spot, and now the woman is being treated at Visby Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, private persons caught the suspected perpetrator and held him in their arms until the police arrived.

Stabbing took place at a central location in Visby’s Donners plats in the middle of the Almedalen politics week, where Sweden’s political elite has gathered. Chairman of the Center Party Annie Löof a press conference was supposed to be held near the crime scene, but the press conference has been canceled.

Police spokesperson Ola Österling said at the crime scene that so far there are no indications that the attempted murder was a politically motivated act. The motive is being investigated. According to the police, there is currently no special threat to the area.

According to Österling, the police caught the suspect in minutes.

Later in the evening Aftonbladet reports, that the suspect has strong connections to the Nordic resistance movement. He has been to the movement’s demonstrations and has written articles and been involved in radio production for the far-right Nordfront online media.

However, the police will not comment on whether these connections have anything to do with the stabbing.

The suspect has stated several times in his social media publications that he denies the Holocaust. Earlier this week, he published an interview with a mass shooter from the 1990s, Aftonbladet says.

Almedalsveckan the representative of Region Gotland, which is responsible for organizing Mia Stuhre says in the announcement that crisis assistance is available in the area.

“This is very serious and terrible. Region Gotland and the Church of Sweden invite those concerned about the situation to Visby Cathedral. There is support here if someone wants to talk about what happened,” says Stuhre.

Also the Minister of Justice of Finland and the chairman of the Rkp Anna-Maja Henriksson commented on the case fresh. Henriksson himself is currently on the spot at Almedalen’s politics week.

“My thoughts are with the victim and his family,” Henriksson wrote on Twitter.

The traditional politics week organized in the medieval town of Visby started on Sunday and ends on Thursday.
