Our “three Italian sites located in Bari, Guidonia and Ivrea have achieved a reduction in Co2 emissions by 28% in the last two years. They have reduced water consumption by 4 percent, increasing the percentage of waste water recycled. There has also been an increase in waste recycling and a reduction in landfill disposal in Ivrea, which we have been implementing since July 2021”. on the occasion of a meeting with the press at the Merck factory in Guidonia (Rome).
“When it comes to implementing sustainability along the entire value chain, we adopt a multidimensional approach – added Rodò – We act at different levels, of the site, of the product, of the patient and at a logistical level. All our 20 sites meet the highest standards for reducing emissions of air, soil and water as well as standards for more efficient use of natural resources, which means we focus on energy: what kind of energy we are consuming, how much energy we are consuming. We are trying to reduce it and switch to renewable energy. And last but not least, we also respect everything related to biodiversity conservation and challenge the status quo.”
Regarding Merck's future objectives in terms of sustainability, Rodò specified: “in the Group we have the ambition to communicate to stakeholders and our investors to be climate neutral by 2040. To achieve this objective we have put in place “We have many plans in place to address our carbon footprint, addressing energy and water use, the way we operate and many other aspects.” It must “be a multidimensional approach. We have also leveraged the organization called Sbti, which is the Science Based Target Institution, to certify that the goals and plans we are leaving behind are legitimate and realistic. And we obtained this certification 2 years ago” he concluded.
