Helsinki police are investigating a case in which a 30-year-old man is suspected of raping a young woman after a taxi ride, police said in a statement on Wednesday.
The suspected rape occurred last weekend late Saturday night.
According to police, the incident began when the taxi driver had taken the woman home as agreed. The preliminary investigation revealed that after the trip, the taxi driver followed the woman to her apartment without permission.
The plaintiff had ordered the man to leave the apartment and then go to sleep.
After some time, the woman woke up to the fact that the suspect had sexually assaulted her.
“The identity of the suspect was ascertained from the taxi application,” says the crime inspector Jari Koski in the bulletin.
Helsinki police say they have found that taxi drivers have been increasingly suspected of various sexual offenses in recent years. The number of suspected sexual offenses committed by taxi drivers has increased since the summer of 2018.
Typically, the suspected crime occurred at night in a taxi, en route from a taxi home, or after a taxi ride to the plaintiff’s home. The suspects have been men and have targeted women.
The suspect has been known in 41 cases. There were a total of 30 suspects in various crimes. The status of a suspect in a crime may have changed during the pre-trial investigation if, for example, the plaintiff has waived his claims.
The suspects in all cases are not known to the police, meaning the police also do not know the backgrounds of the suspects. In one of the cases, the suspect has come from Finland.
“Police stress that naturally the majority of taxi rides are still safe. This observed phenomenon in taxis only affects a very small proportion of taxi passengers and taxi drivers, ”Koski says in a press release.
