Suspected criminal offenses 200 kilos of cocaine among red wine bottles were smuggled to the port of Vuosaari in Helsinki

Police tracked down the crimes as they followed the transfer of a suspicious sports bag from one car to another in Kurkimäki.

Central Criminal Police has completed a preliminary investigation into cocaine imports to Finland via the Port of Vuosaari. Five people are suspected of felony drug offenses.

Cocaine arrived in port in March in a container containing red wine bottles.

Police was tracked down by criminals in early April as it followed a suspicious incident in a parking lot in Kurkimäki, Helsinki.

The main suspects, two Swedish and one Danish national, were seen carrying a large sports bag carrying some goods in a car registered in the Netherlands. By the time the car was full, the bag was empty.

Police followed both the trio to a nearby hotel and the driver of the car to a hotel in Pasila. Both hotels and the car were searched. A cache containing 18 pounds of cocaine was thus found in a cache built in the trunk of the car. An additional 12 pounds was hidden in the laundry room of the hotel used by the trio.

Police arrested the trio and the driver of the car. Based on the communication between them, it became clear how the events had progressed.

The trio had entered the country about a week before the drug trafficking was seen by police. On the same day, 22 March, a cargo ship carrying a container containing red wine bottles and drugs and arriving from Belgium had arrived in port.

The main suspects broke into the container the next night. The reports reported a total of 204 pounds of cocaine. According to the police, the value of such an amount in the street trade would be about 20 million euros. However, the quality of the seized drug was so pure that the police estimated that it would have been continued and thus obtained even higher sums from its sale.

“None of the suspects had visited Finland before. According to the police report, the sole purpose of the visit has been to retrieve drugs from a container that was known in advance, ”says Crime Commissioner Marko Heinonen in a press release.
