The rehabyar land of Campos Foundation has denounced this Sunday the recent Drapple of the side nave and the facade Access from the Church of the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, in Campos Cuenca (Valladolid). In a statement collected by Ical, he has expressed his “deepest regret” for this fact, which he has assured supposes “a serious loss” for the architectural heritage of the region.
In that sense, he has claimed to work in the consolidation of this historical good, which, he has criticized, has been in a situation of “extreme vulnerability.” This convent, founded in 1455 by María Fernández de Velasco, has a witness to centuries of history. Originally, the clear nuns occupied the units of the family palace, and the Church was built in the second half of the fifteenth century in Mudejar style.
Subsequently, the convent was enriched with various interventions, including the construction of the flat alfarje of the Sotocoro and its transformation into a Baroque temple in the first decades of the 16th century. In 1925, the majority of the torque and knuckle armor of the major and the sides were sold to William Randolph Hearst, and in 1967, the Nuns left the convent, moving to Santa Clara de Palencia and taking most of the movable property. Since then, the building has suffered a progressive deterioration, which since the rehabite, defend, they have tried to stop by carrying out different rehabilitation projects.
«Unfortunately, support is not enough and in recognition of its delicate structural situation, at the request of our Foundation, the convent was included in the Hispania Nostra Red List On October 11, 2023, ”said the Foundation. In his opinion, the modification of the roof after sale to the United States, added to the water leaks, has caused the collapse of the side nave and the access facade.
In September 2018, after the collapse of the vaults of the choir, they carried out an emergency intervention in the central nave, consolidating the covers and recovering the braces. In 2020, they acted on the apse deck. Two projects were supported by the Diputación de Valladolid and the Junta de Castilla y León.
Currently, the Foundation, as explained, that Work on the project for the consolidation of the ship CentraL and the sides of the church, since the thrusts that are producing were generating the collapse of the walls, which has been the direct cause of the collapse of the access facade and the side nave.
The Church is PROPERTY OF THE FOUNDATION TIERRA DE CAMPOS Since 2018, he bought it to avoid collapse with the support of the City of Cuenca de Campos. “We never lose hope, so we will continue working to evaluate the damages and seek urgent solutions that avoid a greater collapse of the set,” they have affirmed, while calling the administrations and civil society so that they join The preservation of the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, because “the situation requires an immediate intervention that guarantees the safety of the building and its recovery for future generations.”
