López, 28, is being investigated, but has not been arrested, within the framework of the ilex operation for drug trafficking.
Maynar, long record
In May the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard arrested in Cáceres within the framework of said operation to the professor of the University of Extremadura Mark Maynar for an alleged crime of illegal drug trafficking and who years ago was accused of administering doping substances to athletes.
According to sources close to the investigation, the arrest took place after searching his office at the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Extremadura, in an operation directed by the Court of Instruction number 4 of Cáceres and carried out by agents of the UCO Health and Doping group. The detainee was charged with a crime against public health and another of illegal drug trafficking.
He is a Spanish doctor, graduated in sports medicine with the thesis Metabolic physiology of professional cycling in 1990. He has been a professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Extremadura and, in addition, he has managed the medical department of several teams, institutions and athletes in many disciplines.
Juan Ignacio Maynar He is his brother and with him they were in charge of a biochemistry laboratory at the University of Extremadura.
Between the two they developed a report in which they argued that the positive with nandrolone from Carlos Gurpegui, Athletic Club playeroccurred because the athlete produced that substance naturally.
Athletic’s doctor was Sabine Padilla, colleague and friend of Maynar, so the allegation was developed, which had no progress, since Gurpegui was suspended for two years.
doping in cycling
Maynar was linked to cycling and one of his first cases was the ‘defense’ of the positive of Aitor González, a runner from the Euskatel-Euskadi teamwho tested positive for anabolics.
Maynar filed a report trying to show that Gonzalez took a compound that was contaminated. The TAS dismissed the report and sanctioned the rider for two years.
Maynar continued to work and was linked in 2004 in the investigation of the Operation Gamma, for an alleged crime against public health.
The doctor was arrested with 126 other people, who were investigated for the sale of synthetic drugs, steroids and hormones, a network that was dismantled.
It was learned that people were selling this kind of substance in gyms in 31 departments in Spain. When they raided his home, steroids and anabolic steroids were seized from Maynar, but in spite of everything, he was released, but the investigation went to the court on June 6. Malaga.
Some time later, Maynar was acquitted, as he showed that these drugs were used for his research.
A deceased in tow?
Marcos Maynar, with his contacts in other countries, came to the sport from Portugal. Bruno Neves was a cyclist who died on May 11, 2008, when he belonged to the team LA-MSSwhose medical chief was the Spanish doctor.
Neves died after a fall, but an autopsy revealed that he went into cardiac arrest before hitting the ground.
After that event, on May 18 of that year, the police, who had been investigating several doping cases for four months, registered the LA-MSS team and substances such as growth hormone, EPO, stimulants and elements with which autotransfusions of blood were practiced.
Maynar defended himself by claiming that he was unaware of the doping techniques that were discovered and that he was unaware of what the cyclists were doing on their own.
Of course, at that point, his name was much more linked to those, issues, that’s why the police followed his steps from those years.
The Portuguese Cycling Federation took action on the matter and suspended Maynar for 10 years, due to the cases mentioned above
In 2009, the Prosecutor’s Office of that country accused Maynar and the sports director Manuel Zeferino of 16 crimes related to doping, a fact discovered in 2008, but Maynar was acquitted.
Then it was in Germany that his name appeared. ARD, a television network in that country, reported that Maynar offered his medical services to important cycling teams such as CSC-Saxo Bank, Gerolsteiner, Milram and Columbia-High Road.
Maynar did it on behalf of the University of Extremadura. The theme was that the riders would undergo medical examinations with some periodicity, in which performance parameters would be evaluated.
The investigation warned that the main objective of this program would be for cyclists to test positive for doping despite having used prohibited substances.
Maynar assured, in those days, that he had sent the request to some groups, but that the objective was to detect those who cheated.
Today the name of Marcos Maynar comes out into the public eye again, after the linking of the Colombian cyclist Miguel Ángel López to the Ilex operation in Spain.
