The recent case of Colton Herta’s failure to promote in Formula 1, an IndyCar driver lacking the minimum requirements necessary to obtain the Super license useful at the entrance to the Circus, it has sparked debates on scoring system which guarantees the drivers of other categories to approach or even make their debut in F1. Following the debut of Max Verstappen in 2015, which took place when the Dutchman was still a minor, the FIA has imposed changes to the regulations by adjusting the age of the drivers, who must now come of age to enter F1 with the minimum points valid for the Super license, that is 40.
A sufficiency that must be achieved within three seasons in the championships recognized by the FIA, which, depending on their prestige and their level of difficulty, provide a different amount of points for the top ten classified (exclusively in the first tier championships) in the world or national rankings. For the champion of Formula 2 and IndyCarthe conquest of a title would already be enough to be able to make the leap in quality in F1, with these categories being the only ones to foresee a prize of 40 points on the Super license for the one who wins the championship. Formula 2 itself also reserves this recognition to the vice-champion and to the 3rd classified.
Lower than ten points, and therefore with a total of 30 always in favor of the winner, there are three other categories: the Formula 3the Formula E and the LMP1, queen of the Endurance championship. Below the latter, there are then the classes that provide half of the points necessary for the achievement of the Super license, that is to say the LMP2 (also from the Endurance world championship) and two other leading realities of the GT scene such as the DTM and the Super GTall at altitude 20 points reserved for the winner. The latter, therefore, will be ‘forced’ to win two titles in the three years available in order to hope for a debut in F1.
As the category goes down, the points obviously get lower and lower: the double-digit recognition remains for the world championship IMSA (18), followed by the WTCC and from another US series like the NASCAR, which both reserve a prize of 15 points. At 12, all the nations that welcome the category of Formula 4with these leading six classes in the standings, which award 10 points to the winner: European or Asian Le Mans SeriesWorld Endurance (classes GTE Pro / GTE Am), IMSA GTLM, F3 Asian Winter Series (the same ones that had been evaluated in recent days by Herta in order to earn the remaining 8 points to obtain the Super license), the Mazda formula and the NASCAR National. Finally, the undertaking in other realities such as Formula Toyota (7 points), the International GT Open (6 points) and the world karting, the lowest of the FIA categories with only 4 points assigned to the winner, is even more complex. In addition to all these features, each driver can also obtain extras for the Super license, introduced in 1984 and subject to modifications several times: among these, 1 point obtained after reaching 100 km in a free practice session (up to a maximum of 10 points), 2 points after completing a championship without any penalty, and another 5 in case of victory in the Macau Grand Prix. At the same time, should a participant reach a maximum number of 12 penalty points, the latter is automatically disqualified for the next race.
