Culiacán, Sinaloa.- The choreographer Sunny Savoy was awarded with the 37th José Limón National Contemporary Dance Awardin a special ceremony that took place this Tuesday, May 7 on the esplanade of the Sinaloa Art Museum.
During the ceremony there was the participation of Hector Romero Lecandadeputy director general of INBAL; Juan Salvador Aviles Ochoageneral director of the Sinaloense Institute of Culture, ISIC, the two convening institutions, as well as the choreographer Carlos Alberto Zamora, artistic director of the José Limón International Dance Festival; and Rodolfo Arriagadirector of Artistic Programming at ISIC.
They honor his career
“I hope that the passion for dance enlightens us all to dance and fight for a better world, dance is a link to express the dilemmas of human beings, and I am very honored and dance is important so that we can change this world, “We are living in very difficult times,” said Sunny Savoy upon receiving the award.
The teacher thanked her for the Award and dedicated it to all those colleagues, dancers and choreographers, who have accompanied her for 39 years, and “something has not changed throughout all these years, that they are all people who want to fight to improve the world.” through our art, from our corner, from our environment, from our region, from our city, from our town, and this award is for them.”
Originally from Louisiana, USA, and living for many years in Monterrey, Nuevo León, the teacher and choreographer thanked Mexico, “because it has given me the most beautiful thing, which is the possibility of creating with great artists and with the most beautiful people ; Thank you for the hospitality and I dedicate this award to all the dancers who have sacrificed, dreamed and built together our history in dance, thank you for this award; “It is such a great honor because José Limón is one of the great promoters of contemporary dance.”
For his part, Romero Lecanda said that INBAL is proud to present the award to Sunny Savoy, who has left a mark on the Mexican dance scene for her ability to merge impeccable technique with a deep emotional narrative; “She made possible the birth of a contemporary dance with rigor, discipline and artistic sense alien to any protagonism, but she is not only a masterful choreographer, but also a respected teacher and researcher.”
Furthermore, he added that his commitment to artistic training and his passion for nurturing and empowering the next generation of dancers and creators is exemplary.
“By granting this Award we not only celebrate your past achievements and your history in the dance of this country, but we also recognize your mark on your company and the masterful pieces with which you will continue to impact us in the future,” he said.
Closing of the Festival
After the formal ceremony, held in the courtyard of the Sinaloa Museum of Art, the third call was given for the final performance of the 37th José Limón International Dance Festivalwith the choreographic show Shared Levitationof Marion Sparber (Italy) and Alan Fuentes-Guerra (Mexico) in collaboration with the Danza Joven de Sinaloa company, which they co-direct Edylin Zatarain and Carlos Zamora.
The program was integrated with two choreographies: The Transience of Daisies, a one-man show by Marion Sparberin which he pays a colorful tribute to the Mexican painter Frida Kahloresorting, in addition to body movement, to dance theater, video projection, costumes, painting, music and dance, leading through the dark passages of the suffering of this great Mexican artist.
The other piece, in which Danza Joven de Sinaloa participated, was titled Side (D) Effect (Red is SIDE D effect)a collaboration between the creatives of the two companies, in which they play visually through bodily expression with concepts such as: “Each instinct is so different and common sense is the least common of the senses… The journey takes us to both sides, Up and down are the same direction, the dream interrupted by colored lights.”
