Summer attracts many Germans to vacation regions. That will not change even during the corona pandemic. But Delta could take away the lightheartedness of many a trip.
Munich – vacation time is the best time of the year. This also applies during the corona pandemic. The first federal states have already released their students for the summer holidays, the others follow almost on a weekly basis. Only in mid-September, when Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria get going again, will the whole of Germany be taught again.
Until then, families and children have to just switch off and enjoy life. But how carefree is that even possible in the second summer of the corona pandemic? It is true that around 40 percent of the population are now double vaccinated against severe Covid 19 courses. It cannot be dismissed out of hand, however, that the Delta variant, which has evolved from the original SARS-CoV-2 in India, could mutate into a real spoilsport.
Summer vacation in corona pandemic: CDU politician thinks Ballermann is currently “madness”
Politicians are said to have given the first warnings against a carefree vacation. The travelers could be threatened with a rude awakening at the latest when they return home. According to picture Baden-Württemberg’s Interior Minister Thomas Strobl weathered the CDU presidium: “The stadiums are full, Ballermann is open, planes are filled to the last seat. From an infection point of view, the Ballermann is madness. “
Why is he targeting Mallorca, the Germans’ favorite island, in particular? Presumably because of the large number of party holidaymakers who can be found there. In addition, pictures of overcrowded beaches are already going around the world. And: In addition to German citizens, the British also enjoy vacationing on the Balearic island. In the UK, the delta appears to be expanding faster than anywhere else in Europe.
Summer vacation in corona pandemic: will Mallorca soon become a virus variant area?
The tabloid even fears that if the mutation spreads quickly, the government or the Robert Koch Institute could declare Mallorca a virus variant area. The consequence of this would be that those returning from travel who would only leave after the new classification would have to go into quarantine in Germany for 14 days.
Portugal, another popular holiday destination – as well as India, Nepal, Russia, Great Britain and Northern Ireland – has only just been downgraded from virus variants to a high-incidence area. Here the quarantine could be ended with a negative test, but this may not be carried out before five days at the earliest. Fully vaccinated and convalescents, who can provide evidence of their particular situation, are excluded.
Summer vacation in corona pandemic: three out of four corona samples in Portugal have delta tracks
According to the European Disease Protection Authority “ECDC”, the delta variant already takes around three quarters of the samples sequenced in Portugal – however, this check was only carried out in 1.4 percent of the cases. The situation in Europe is said to be similarly dramatic only in Estonia and Luxembourg. The 14-day incidence in Portugal is currently given as 169.
Spain is the country at 107. Around every third of the sequenced samples contained evidence of Delta. However, just 1.2 percent of the corona cases were tested for this mutation.
Summer vacation in corona pandemic: Only a small proportion of cases are checked for delta variants
Other southern European countries move in similar spheres, which make the holidaymaker’s heart beat faster. Italy’s incidence is given as 22, the proportion of the delta variant with just under 29 percent – although only 2.1 percent of the cases were examined accordingly. In France the incidence is 43, here delta was detectable in every fifth sample. However, only 0.6 percent of the cases were scrutinized.
Greece has an incidence of 55. Here, the delta variant only accounts for ten percent of the cases, but only 5.9 percent were used. An incidence of 15 is reported for our neighboring country Austria. The proportion of the delta variant is just under 30 percent. A sequencing rate of 7.2 percent is given here.
Summer vacation in corona pandemic: tour operators would cover clinic and quarantine costs
For those who have not yet been immunized, there is always a risk associated with vacation trips this summer. However, even vaccinated people cannot completely free themselves from this, because there is still a lack of reliable data on the protective effect against Delta. So it won’t be a summer like it used to be.
After all, the travel industry gives tourists a hand, like Torsten Schäfer from the German Travel Association in mirror reveals: “Many organizers have included flexible rebooking and cancellation conditions and also Covid protection, ie additional hospital costs or accommodation costs of a quarantine are covered in the event of illness.” Hopefully this outstretched hand does not have to be taken.
