Schiphol airport staff receive a summer allowance of EUR 5.25 gross per hour. This was announced at a press conference on Wednesday. People who work full-time at Schiphol benefit from a gross monthly gain of 840 euros, thanks to the “groundbreaking” agreement, according to the trade union CNV. The wage increases will cost Schiphol 40 to 50 million euros, which means that the profit for this year will be lower.
The scheme applies to security guards, cleaners, employees at check-in, baggage handlers and platform employees. The summer surcharge also applies retroactively to airport staff who worked during the last chaotic May holiday. Then, due to staff shortages and a high number of travelers, long queues arose several times, as a result of which many people missed their flights.
After summer
The summer allowance will take effect next Thursday and will run until the beginning of September. After the summer, some of the employees will receive a bonus of 1.40 euros gross per hour; an arrangement that runs until September 1 next year. Employees who handle ground handling — baggage, taxiing and loading and unloading — are excluded from this. The trade unions have also enforced that all Schiphol employees are reimbursed for their commuting by public transport.
FNV director Joost van Doesburg threatened a “hot summer”, if Schiphol did not take steps to reduce the workload at the airport. They demanded an agreement before June 1, otherwise strikes would follow. On Tuesday it was announced that Schiphol and the trade unions had reached an agreement “in outline”. Schiphol boss Dick Benschop says that airport staff are finally being met with higher wages.
According to CNV negotiator Erik Maas, the penny seems to have fallen “finally” at Schiphol. “For years we have been drawing attention to poor schedules, poor working hours and high work pressure. Schiphol usually shrugged off responsibility.” However, the problems at the airport have not yet been solved immediately. There are about five hundred vacancies in security alone, the CNV warns.
