Gender violence has once again worsened in Spain coinciding with the summer season in the country: 19 women were murdered by their partners or ex-partners, more than half of the 35 femicides recorded so far this year, between June 20 and September 22.

The youngest victim was 20 years old, the oldest was 76. In addition, three minors were killed as a result of vicarious crimes, and 11 children have been orphaned as a result of these crimes.
The summer season in Spain is a a time of risk for victims of gender violence, due to greater contact with the aggressors during the holiday period.
Records show that July and August are the bloodiest months of gender-based violencewith 136 and 120 fatalities since 2003, respectively. They are followed by June (117) and January -also a holiday month- with 112.
This concentration has been studied by the country’s Attorney General’s Office in its latest annual report, relating to 2023, in which it analyzes how during the holidays, A higher number of murders due to gender violence occur on weekends and holidays.
The public prosecutor’s office indicates that one of the reasons that explain the concentration of femicides is the intensification of the coexistence and social and family relationships during holiday periods.
So far in 2024, 35 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners (1,279 since 2003) and 10 minors have been victims of vicarious crimes, the highest annual figure since statistics began to be compiled in 2013.
