With the arrival of summer and high temperatures, even the conditioners. It is about household appliances among the most energy-hungry and the issue therefore becomes of great importance in a moment like the present one: the increase in the cost of energy, made exponential by the conflict in Ukraine, has already presented a very high bill in the pockets of Italians in recent months.
Precisely for this reason, the government has promoted a reduction in consumption in an attempt not to damage energy resources too much. Last May 1st, in fact, they were limits on the use of air conditioners have been introduced for public officeswhich cannot be set to less than 27 °, with two degrees of tolerance (in fact, you will not be able to go lower than 25 °). On the other hand, it is more complicated to intervene at a national level on domestic and private use. However, a “natural” limit, which will lead most users to moderate and intelligent use of the air conditioner, will probably be imposed by the cost of energy: Italian consumers will spend twice as much to keep the air conditioner on as last year.
How much does it cost to cool the environment?
To sound the alarm is Selectrathe company that compares the rates of electricity, gas and internet, which conducted a study to simulate how much each Italian family could spend to turn on the air conditioners at home.
In June, for each air conditioner enough to cool a room of 25 m2 Selectra estimates a bill of almost € 21 per month for those who still rely on Greater Protection Servicethat is to say over 10 € / month more than in June 2021 (+ 100%). The cost drops by about one euro for those who are in the Free Marketwhere the mean is almost 20 € / month (+ 92% compared to last year, i.e. + € 9.5 / month). Those who have one of the most convenient offers on the Free Market will spend just under € 17 / month for the air conditioner, with a smaller increase (+ 81%, or + € 7.5) compared to a year ago.
The bill in the bill is less traumatic for those who choose to refresh the rooms with the fan: in the Protected Market we speak of 3 € / month, while for those who have one of the most convenient offers on the Free Market, the price drops to 2.5 €. In any case, it is also in this case a doubling compared to what was spent in June 2021when the cost was between € 1 and € 1.5 / month.
The urgency to save could in this case translate into better consumption habits for the future: to the benefit not only of consumers’ pockets, but also of the planet. Because of this Selectra has drawn up an agile vademecum with 8 tips for reduce i consumption of air conditioners in home.
Tips for effective conditioning
1 – Carry out proper maintenance before the start of the summer season. In particular, it is good to clean the fans and sanitize the filters: it is important not only for health (molds and bacteria easily accumulate in the filters, including salmonella), but also for the amount of energy we risk wasting;
2 – Use the dehumidification function, which has a much less impact on consumption. It is useful because it is often the high humidity that makes you feel higher temperatures.
3 – Arrange the air conditioning system in an intelligent way: it is better to install more devices, so as to keep switched on only those in the frequented areas of the house. It is also preferable to install them as high as possible, since the cold air will tend to descend, absolutely avoiding placing them behind obstacles such as curtains or sofas;
4 – The difference between the house and outside temperatures should never exceed 6 degrees: therefore, you should not set too low temperatures even in your home, where there will be no explicit prohibitions.
5 – Prefer inverter devices (compared to on-off ones) of the new generation and higher energy class, by choosing high energy class air conditioners: in fact, compared to a lower energy class system, consumption can be reduced by up to 30-40%. In this regard, Selectra recalls that also in 2022 the bonus per the purchase of high efficiency air conditioners, in the event of renovations or energy redevelopments, with possible reimbursements between 50% and 65%.
6 – When the air conditioner is on, it is fine close all doors and windows. It would also be ideal to lower the blinds or close the curtains, in order to avoid the heating effect of direct sunlight.
7 – Check the thermal insulation of the refrigerant circuit pipes located outside the home; Furthermore, the outdoor unit of the air conditioner should not be exposed to the sun and bad weather;
8 – If you do not give up the air conditioner when you go to sleep, use the “night” function: allows you to automatically adjust the room temperature, adapting it to our night rest.
