The tribal body said it would give Abdullah Hamdok’s government two weeks to resolve the worsening crisis in eastern Sudan.
It seems that this initiative came after efforts to defuse an expected escalation, as the Supreme Council of Beja Opticals announced, on Friday, that it would announce, in the coming hours, a “complete revolutionary escalatory schedule”, coinciding with the expiration of a previous government deadline.
The council said in a statement: “We note not to listen to rumors (…), and a full revolutionary escalatory schedule will be announced in the coming hours by the Escalatory Committee of the Supreme Council of Beja Opticals and independent columns. Stay tuned for the escalating schedule.”
The language of the tribal council has been escalating in recent days, vowing to “close eastern Sudan without any exceptions.”
The Beja tribe is one of the largest population components in eastern Sudan.
Eastern Sudan has been witnessing a crisis since mid-September, when the council’s supporters organized protests in the port of Port Sudan against the historic peace agreement signed by the transitional government in October 2020 in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
The protesters demanded that the agreement be canceled, considering that it does not guarantee a fair representation of the eastern Sudan region and its tribes.
The Council calls for holding a comprehensive conference regarding eastern Sudan to decide its future. He also says the region suffers from government marginalization.
In the past months, the tribal council reopened the ports in the strategic city of Port Sudan, as well as the road linking these ports to the capital, Khartoum.
