Sudan Sudanese army general defends military coup, ousted prime minister is returned to his home

The Sudanese prime minister has returned home, according to sources in the news agency Reuters.

Sudan army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhanin according to Monday’s military coup was not a military coup but an attempt to prevent a looming civil war.

Al-Burhan, the military leader of the Sudan Transitional Council, disbanded the country’s transitional government on Monday and declared a state of emergency. The declaration came after soldiers had arrested several Sudanese civilian leaders early Monday morning in a series of events called a military coup.

Among those arrested is the prime minister, among others Abdalla Hamdok. According to Al-Burhan, the state of emergency will end when a new government is in place.

At a news conference on Tuesday, al-Burhan defended the army’s Monday actions. The event was reported by the news agency Reuters, among others.

In Sudan there have been recent demonstrations against, among others, the transitional government. The protests have called for the army to disband the government. At the same time, several civilian leaders took part in protests against the military and military power last week.

Al-Burhan on Tuesday accused politicians of “inciting citizens against the army”.

“The things we witnessed last week could have led to a civil war,” al-Burhan appealed on Tuesday.

Sudan has been led since August 2019 by a Transitional Council with both civilian leaders and military representatives, including General al-Burhan. Tensions with civilian leaders and military representatives have intensified recently.

Indeed, Al-Burhan claimed on Tuesday that the army was trying to pave the way for new elections with its actions on Monday. The transitional government was to lead new elections by the end of 2023.

Al-Burhan also said at a news conference that the ousted prime minister is at the general’s home for “security reasons”. According to Al-Burhan, Prime Minister Hamdok is “in good shape” and “will return home as long as the crisis is over”.

Later on Tuesday, the news agency Reuters military source and a source from the prime minister’s office said Prime Minister Hamdok has returned home. The sources of the news agency AFP also said the same. No other state of the prime minister has been reported. Earlier on Tuesday, the Prime Minister’s Office called for the immediate release of both the Prime Minister and other ministers in a Facebook post. The Chancellery did not acknowledge the coup in its publication.
