Fifteen people were killed in new demonstrations in Sudan against the military coup on Wednesday. That reports Sudan Central Doctors Committee, a cooperative association of doctors. According to the doctors’ organization, it was the security forces who shot protesters. Thousands of people took to the streets in different cities.
Most of the deaths have occurred in the capital Khartoum. About 80 protesters are said to have been injured. In addition, there is said to have been an attack on a few hospitals in Khartoum. Due to the violence, there is a serious shortage of hospital staff and too little blood is available for transfusions, reports the doctors organization.
The new civilian government that should lead the country to free elections was supposed to be installed on Wednesday. With the coup, the military junta thwarted this plan. At the end of October, soldiers arrested almost all members of the Sudanese government. The airport was closed and the state broadcaster was invaded. Since then, citizens have regularly protested in Sudan. At least 39 people have been killed in recent weeks, according to the doctors’ organization.
