On Sunday, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, witnessed the signing of a political agreement to return Abdallah Hamdok to the prime ministership, reversing the army’s measures that ousted him last October, then met with rejection in the street and widespread international condemnation.
The agreement was signed between Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok.
The agreement between Al-Burhan and Hamdok provides for the release of all political detainees in the country, while stressing the acceleration of the formation of transitional governance institutions.
The agreement between Al-Burhan and Hamdok stressed that the constitutional document is the main reference for completing the transitional phase in Sudan, but with the need to make an amendment in order to expand political participation.
The agreement signed in Khartoum stresses the necessity of implementing the Juba Peace Agreement, as well as forming a unified national army.
The army had placed Hamdok under house arrest when he announced his assumption of power on October 25, following a move led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The October 25 measures ended a transitional partnership between the military and civilian groups that helped oust President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
